My favourite pub burnt down a year ago. It was just over the border from the Gold Coast where I live and, like many old Aussie pubs, it was made of wood. I remember the friendly atmosphere and the decorated signs above the bar. They expressed simple truths in language everyone can understand.
I drove past the site, the other day, expecting to see a wasteland. Instead, I saw a new building. The pub is being rebuilt in the old colonial style. Non-combustible materials are being used. They have the outward appearance of wood and will look the same when painted.
The header image is my attempt to reproduce one of the old signs. The bottom picture shows the pub in happier days.
